What is Twice-Exceptionality (2e)?

Twice-exceptional students possess unique learning profiles characterized by gifts and talents in one or more domains as well as one or more learning differences. 2e often goes undiagnosed and is misunderstood in the classroom due to the complexity of the learning profile. Gifts and learning differences can mask each other. As a result, children may appear to be “average” students.

This may result in:

• Feeling unseen and unrecognized for what a person does well and/or where they need additional support.

• Confusion regarding why some areas are effortless while others are so challenging.

• Feeling misunderstood and alone in the classroom or workplace.

• Low self-worth, anxiety, and depression.

2e individuals require a program that nurtures their gifts and talents while accommodating and supporting their learning challenges. Focusing on student strengths will increase motivation, self-confidence, and meaningful learning for all children.
